CAPTION: A new report by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai indicates that although China is a crucial source of profits for U.S. companies, red tape, product piracy, and other problems are hindering growth and fair competition. (Jan. 19)

AS CHINESE PRESIDENT HU VISITS THE U-S ALONG WITH CHINESE BUSINESS LEADERS, A NEW STUDY BY THE AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN SHANGHAI SHOWS THAT 80 PERCENT OF AMERICAN COMPANIES THERE INTEND TO BOOST CHINA INVESTMENTS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE COUNTRY'S FAST GROWTH.
ONE SUCH INDUSTRY HOPING TO CATCH LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE IS THE CALIFORNIA WINE INDUSTRY.
(wine pouring nats)
(California Wine Export Program soundbite)
CHINA IS A CRUCIAL SOURCE OF PROFITS FOR U-S BUSINESS, BUT PRODUCT PIRACY, RED-TAPE AND OTHER PROBLEMS REMAIN SERIOUS OBSTACLES.
BUT MANY WESTERN COMPANIES HAVE ALREADY BEEN WILLING TO MAKE SACRIFICES TO DO BUSINESS THERE.
Vinnie Aggarwal, UC Berkeley Political Science Professor, says: "It's the old 1950's attitude, if we could sell one aspirin to every Chinese we'd be rich. So I think in many cases American and European companies are actually guilty of going there and selling off their technology or being willing to give away more than they should. So you can't blame the Chinese for the over eagerness of American and European companies."
GIVEN CHINA'S MASSIVE TRADE SURPLUS, AMERICAN BUSINESSES HAVE LONG COMPLAINED THAT CHINA SELLS FAR MORE TO THE U-S THAN IT BUYS.
BUT OFFICIALS AT ONE OF THE LARGEST CHINESE CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE IN THE US SAY CRITICISM OF CHINESE BUSINESS PRACTICES HURTS TRADE, WHICH THEY SAY IS CRUCIAL FOR AMERICA'S ECONOMIC RECOVERY.
Rose Pak, San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce, says: "I'm sure the American people appreciate that even though some of our leaders don't."
NEARLY HALF OF THE COMPANIES RESPONDING TO THE SHANGHAI SURVEY REPORT REGULATIONS FAVOR DOMESTIC COMPANIES OVER FOREIGN RIVALS, ESPECIALLY IN THE 88 BILLION DOLLAR GOVERNMENT PROCUREMENT MARKET. HAVEN DALEY, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.
